Cranial Osteopathy For Children
The terms “Cranial Osteopathy” and “Osteopathy in the Cranial Field” relate to a very subtle and gentle manual approach to restoring the body to optimal function and thus health.

In 1900, and American Osteopath named Dr William Garner Sutherland was struck by the idea that the joints between the bones in the skull were designed in such a way as to permit motion between the bones.  This was contrary to teachings of the time.

Over the next 10 years, Dr Sutherland attempted to disprove this idea by studying anatomy and physiology in detail and by performing various experiments.  He was, however, unable to do so.  He in fact established that the involuntary motion in the body is essential for the maintenance of health as it affects the function of every cell in the body.

During his experimentation, Dr Sutherland developed skills that allowed him to feel a “micro motion” that is present in the head as well as in the rest of the body.  He called this motion “involuntary motion”.  In recent times, scientific research has measured this involuntary motion in the head region at between 0.125 and 0.25 mm.

In his clinical practice, Dr Sutherland diagnosed restrictions of involuntary motion in patients who had suffered from trauma.  Once he had developed the appropriate skills to release some of these traumatic restrictions of involuntary motion, he was able to assist his patients suffering with a variety of major health problems.

It was not until the 1930s that Dr Sutherland presented his findings to the osteopathic profession and began teaching his work to other osteopaths.

Since his death in 1954, the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation (SCTF) in the USA has continued to promote and validate Dr Sutherland’s discoveries.

What Conditions Are Commonly Treated By Cranial Osteopaths?

Paediatric conditions, should include a idiopathic scoliosis, otitis media, glue ear, hyperactivity, ADD/ADHD, learning difficulties/problems, feeding problems, strabismus, tonsillitis, brain injury, colic, reflux, developmental delay, asthma, Down’s syndrome, plagiocephaly, autism, cerebral palsy, etc. Then have a group such as somatic pain or body pain, which will include conditions like headaches, migraine, TMJ pain and malocclusion, sinusitis, hay fever, neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, back pain, disc herniation/prolapse, sciatica, hip, knee, ankle, and foot pain, etc. Another group can be named Systemic conditions which includes, pain of pregnancy, mastitis, irritable bowel syndrome and so forth.

What Age Groups Can Be Treated By Cranial Osteopaths?

Osteopathic treatment in the cranial field is extremely gentle and as such is suitable for people of all ages, from infants at birth through to the elderly. (Osteopathy in the cranial field is a very gentle form of treatment and is suitable for all ages, form infants to the elderly)

What Happens During A Cranial Treatment?

A description of the process of history taking, examination, diagnosis, treatment and referral.

Cranial Osteopaths use very gentle palpation to diagnose and treat the restrictions in the tissues of the body. This may include the head, spine, pelvis, abdomen, hand or leg. Any part of the body can be palpated and examined for restriction using gentle hand placement. The osteopath who is well trained in the anatomy and living function of the tissues, can also  feel restrictions in fluid motion and for any restriction in the tissue’s inherent or involuntary motion. Treatment involves very gentle motion and or pressure that encourage the tissue’s inherent corrective mechanisms to bring about a balance in the function of that part of the body. Restoration in the balance of one part of the body will have an effect on other parts, because the body acts as a unit of function. That is all body functions are related.
